Magra Forest is located on the Dehradun-Mussoorie-Suakholi-Thatyur state highway, 20km from Mussoorie town. Best place for bird watchers during summer and autumn.
Magra to Suakholi and to Thatyur amidst thick forests of Deodar, Oak and Rhododendron. The notable birds sighted are Great-barbet, Red-billed Blue Magpie , Black-headed Jay grey-headed woodpecker, blue whistling thrush, Eurasian jay, Streaked laughing thrush, Bar-tailed tree creeper, Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush , Rufous Sibia , etc.
Magra Forest Rest House is surrounded by fruit trees, mainly walnut, apple and apricot, along with saplings of various tree species. Other than natural forests , this mixture of human cultivation and natural habitat attracts much birdlife. Nocturnal species can also be observed in the fields . Species may include Asian Barred Owlet and Nightjar.
The valley begins with Oak-Rhododendron forestaround Magra, ,Cheer Pine forest and cultivated terraces and open hillsides used for grazing cattles and goats. This slope and habitats makes this valley paradise for birders.
